2002 Beach Water Quality Results

Dry summer minimizes pollution.

Only 2 beaches were unsafe for swimming more than 50% of the summer - Rouge Park Beach and Gzowski Beach

Eight beaches were open for more than 80% of the summer: Cherry Beach, Hanlan's Point, Ward's and Centre Island, Beaches Park, Woodbine, Balmy Beach, and Kew Beach.

Cherry Beach was safe for swimming 98% of the summer.

Other good news statistics
:

Hanlan's Point - 91% safe during the summer
Ward's Island - 89%
Centre Island - 87%
Beaches Park - 87%
Woodbine - 85%
Balmy Beach - 84%
Kew Beach - 82%

Of the remaining beaches Rouge Park was unsafe for swimming 60% of the summer; Gzowski Park 55%; Bluffer's, Marie Curtis Park and Sunnyside Beach 40% and Budapest Beach 27%.

2002 was a good summer for water quality because it was also a dry summer, with little rain. The majority of beach pollution comes from overflowing sewers [1] during wet weather events.
