TEA calling on the Province: keep the bottle deposit!

A nickel or a dime may not seem like a lot, but Ontario's Beer Store and LCBO deposit programs prove that putting a deposit on drink containers is the best way to get high return rates for recycling or reuse.

While Ontario’s Blue Box program recovers less than 60% of drink containers sold in Ontario, over 90% of beer, wine and liquor containers with a deposit are returned.

As the Province contemplates new agreements for where alcohol can be sold in Ontario, TEA is urging the government to consider the environmental impact.

TEA and a number of environmental groups in Ontario are calling on the Province to keep the deposit system for beer and alcohol containers while it is considering changes to how beer is sold. We're also asking the Province to look at expanding the deposit system to all drink containers. See our letter here.
