Toronto: Transit advocates are calling on City Hall to make sure Torontonians have a strong say in the OneCity Plan just announced by TTC Chair Karen Stintz and TTC Vice Chair Glenn DeBaermaeker.

“The OneCity Plan is a great step forward for public transit in Toronto,” said Dr. Franz  Hartmann, Executive Director of the Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA). “We think the funding mechanism is innovative and should be adopted as soon as possible. But let’s first give Torontonians a say in what should be built where before putting any shovels in the ground.”

Hartmann noted that the vision behind the OneCity plan is extremely important, getting public transit to all parts of the city and finding an innovative way for the city to pay its portion of the expansion.

“We need better transit in all parts of the city. This plan sets out a great way to get the conversation going on what this could look like,” said Hartmann. “Next, we need to make sure Torontonians have a chance to make this plan their own by reviewing it and proposing ways to improve it.”

Hartmann also noted that it’s now time for the Provincial and Federal Governments to step up to the plate to help alleviate the huge transit problems facing Toronto. “City Hall can’t solve Toronto’s transit problems alone. Now it’s time for all orders of government to work together to figure out how we can get public transit expansion moving again in Toronto.”
