JOB POSTING: Communications Assistant (Graphic Design & Visual Communications)

Who We Are:

For over 30 years, the Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA) has been advocating on behalf of Torontonians for a green, healthy and equitable city. TEA is a registered non-profit that is recognized Canada-wide for our municipal work on climate change, waste and pollution prevention, and other issues that are critical to the health and well-being of Toronto residents. To promote a greener Toronto, TEA works with concerned individuals, workers, grassroots organizations, businesses, professional associations, and elected officials.

The Position: 

The Communications Assistant will work closely with TEA’s Communications Manager, and will collaborate with different staff across the organization, including campaigns, communications, projects and development staff. 

This position will support a number of initiatives and projects, and will have a key role in creating content for a diverse range of audiences. This position requires someone with visual communication skills, including some experience with graphic design. 

The Toronto Environmental Alliance team is working remotely until at least fall 2021. This position will be based remotely, but the candidate should be based in the Toronto area. 

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the development of campaign, donor stewardship, and program materials for print and digital, such as the organization’s annual report, digital stories showcasing our project impacts, and public reports and resources. 
  • Create content for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, including creative visual and written content. 
  • Create, edit and post content for TEA’s website. 
  • Support email communications where required, such as e-blasts and email newsletters. 
  • Source, create and edit images and graphics for digital and print content. Help maintain a library of photos and assets. 
  • Contribute to communications planning and strategy. Participate in communications meetings and other team meetings.  
  • Compile metrics, update tracking documents, and help maintain TEA’s NationBuilder database. Help to create and maintain digital tools, such as surveys and digital advocacy tools. 
  • Provide some support for online events and programming, such as webinars and online learning sessions, as required.
  • Provide some data entry and administrative support. 

Qualifications:

  • A combination of experience (such as volunteer experience) and education/knowledge of communications, marketing, digital campaigns or a related field. 
  • Skills in graphic design and visual content creation. Familiarity or experience working with programs such as Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator and Canva. 
  • Strong interest and awareness of environmental issues and social justice issues. Commitment to TEA’s equity-focused approach to environmental issues. 
  • Strong written communications skills. Ability to write concisely and communicate complex information. 
  • Other visual content creation skills (i.e. photography, video editing, audio editing) would be an asset.

Other assets: 

  • Some experience or familiarity with web content management systems (i.e. Wordpress, NationBuilder) or CRMs (i.e. NationBuilder) 
  • Knowledge of Toronto and local issues 

The position: 

Full-time contract: 9 weeks at 30 hours/week 

Pay: $17.00 per hour

This position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs. To be eligible, the successful applicant must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; 
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
