CouncilWatch - Urgent: City poised to kill Local Food policy!

June 28, 2011

BREAKING NEWS: City poised to kill Support for Local Food

Late this morning a City of Toronto committee refused to adopt a policy that would direct City staff to buy local food, when appropriate, instead of imported food that may come from thousands of miles away.

Buying local food is good for the environment, fresher and helps our farming neigbhours in the Greenbelt and surrounding areas.

The policy will now go to City Council in two weeks time for debate.

Tell your City Councillor you support the city purchasing local food by signing this online petition or by calling them.

TTCriders launches Toronto's 1st member-based transit group!

TEA has been one of several groups working to create TTCriders since late 2009. On June 22nd, almost 100 people gathered in North York to officially form TTCriders, an advocacy group that  will be a voice for transit riders across the City.
The meeting celebrated the group's successes over the last year, and talked about next steps for the year ahead. TTCriders membership is free to those who agree with TTCriders' vision statement.

Visit TTCriders.ca to become a member and show your support for better transit in Toronto!

Spotlight on Toronto's Environmental Services
We can be proud of some of the great policies and services that make Toronto a green leader in North America:

Community Environment Days - Held in every ward in the City, these events give residents a chance reduce, reuse and recycle, and protect the environment.
Residents pick up free compost, drop off hazardous waste, and trade used goods with neighbours. These events raise awareness and provide access to all Toronto residents to important environmental services.

TEA's summer outreach staff reaching across the City!

This summer TEA is thrilled to have 10 community outreach interns from all corners of Toronto!

Our interns are working in their community engaging local groups and individuals on environmental issues that TEA advocates for.

This is a great opportunity for TEA to reach out to new communities and to connect with people across the City so together we can build a green Toronto for all!

You may see them at community events, farmers' markets, summer festivals and local community centres or even on your street canvassing!
