CouncilWatch - Air Quality Study shows health impacts of transportation

March 2, 2012

Landmark Air Quality Study

On February 27th, the Board of Health reviewed a groundbreaking air quality study by the Toronto Environment Office looking at health impacts of air pollution in Toronto's downtown east end.

TEA has been advocating for air quality research for over a decade, and fully supports these efforts.

The first of its kind, the study looked at the cumulative impacts of various sources of air pollution and the associated health risks such as respiratory diseases and cancer. Read more on our website.

The report appendix includes local and City-wide maps. This map shows benzene emissions concentrated along major highways.

The largest source of air pollution for the area is fuel exhaust from cars and trucks, followed by industry near the Port Lands.

In April, Council will vote on whether to approve the next study location: South Etobicoke (Wards 5 & 6). TEA will push for more of these studies in other parts of the city - let us know if your area might need an air quality study and why!

Celebrating Local Food!

February 28th was Greenbelt Day and the 7th birthday of Ontario's Greenbelt. The Greenbelt is a permanently protected zone around Toronto and the Golden Horseshoe that includes important agricultural land.

TEA celebrated local food and the world's largest protected greenbelt with our friends from the Greenbelt Foundation.

Key TTC votes at Council

On March 5th, Council will debate the composition of the TTC Board. Given recent political wrangling, significant changes are likely. This may have a major impact on TTC expansion plans.

On March 21st, Council will hear from the Sheppard Transit Expert Advisory Panel about the best options for improving transit on Sheppard Avenue. Council created the Expert Panel at the February 8th meeting about transit expansion in Toronto.
