CouncilWatch - TEA turns 25! Another victory at City Hall

April 16, 2013

TEA celebrates 25 years!

Since 1988, TEA has been working with residents and community groups in Toronto to advocate for a greener city for all.  Help us celebrate our 25th year - read about our history, make a donation, and stay tuned for special events and activities.

We're proud of what TEA has accomplished over the years!

TEA 25 years timeline

Zoning bylaw will protect health

A recent victory at City Hall has led to a new zoning law requiring a 300-metre setback between residential areas and crematoriums to protect human health from toxic releases such as heavy metals and particulate matter.

It all started with a small group of Moore Park residents and TEA members concerned about a crematorium operating only 20 metres from their homes. After holding living room meetings with TEA’s Toxics Campaigner, the residents created a Working Group to research and promote safe alternatives like the 300-metre setback.

Since existing crematoriums do not fall under the new zoning rules, local residents are asking Mount Pleasant Cemetery to voluntarily relocate their crematorium 300 metres away. TEA’s canvass is helping to collect local petition signatures door-to-door.

In related news, ChemTRAC data will report on crematorium emissions across Toronto in June 2013 as part of our Community Right to Know bylaw.

2013 Community Environment Days

In 2011, TEA led a fight to keep the 44 events in all parts of the city.
