Environment Group Urges City Hall To Follow Through On Transit City - CityTV

The Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA) is urging the new administration at City Hall to follow through on the Transit City light rail plan.

The group released a study Tuesday calling on the city to go with the cheaper light rail option as opposed to funneling tax dollars into building subways.

TEA says tax dollars are scarce, time is of the essence and the Transit City plan is ready to go.

“Compared to subways, light rail transit (LRT) systems can be built faster and the eight proposed lines would get fast, reliable transit to all corners of the City that are currently under-served,” the report states.

While on the campaign trail, mayor-elect Rob Ford said he’d like to reduce the number of streetcars, claiming they hold up traffic. He also said he’d like to halt the construction of light-rail lines.

He’s since back-pedaled and said he wouldn’t waste taxpayers’ money by canceling the order.

The report, authored by TEA and TTCriders, is also calling on the city to measure levels of smog and greenhouse gas emissions from current practices.
