The East Scarborough Storefront has been celebrated for its Connected Community Approach in facilitating grassroots neighbourhood transformation. Through a community design initiative, the Storefront engaged and empowered local residents to transform previously underutilized land into dynamic community spaces - with an emphasis on sustainability and green design features!

We’re looking at how hubs have used and adapted their physical buildings and grounds to provide crucial support during COVID-19, including providing space to organize emergency responses, growing produce for food distribution, or creating more accessible green space for the community.

As part of our project Accelerating Neighbourhood Climate Solutions Through Community Hubs, we’re sharing stories and exploring some of the lessons that can be learned from community hubs about our city’s emergency response and how to build low-carbon and equitable neighbourhoods. This week, we’re looking at how community hubs have responded to the emergency needs of residents in their neighbourhood. These responses have included community agency programs like emergency food distribution and supporting resident and community-led mutual aid networks.

In this new blog series, our Climate Campaigner Michael Polanyi is sharing stories and exploring some of the lessons that can be learned from community hubs about our city’s emergency response and how to build more resilient, low-carbon and equitable neighbourhoods.
