Just east of Toronto, the “state-of-the-art” incinerator built to burn the garbage for Durham and York Regions is already going over toxic air emission limits in the testing stage.

After hearing from TEA, residents and other community groups, Peel Council changed their Long Term waste plan and voted to cancel a costly incinerator, voting instead for better recycling and composting.

At a Council Meeting last week, Councillors approved the next phase of the Long Term Waste Management Strategy development. Several Councillors used TEA’s materials and messages to call for reducing and recycling more waste.

This week, Councillors are voting on the framework and options consultants will use to draft a long term waste strategy for Toronto. The strategy will come to the public in early 2016.

Located in Scarborough, 430 Mayfair on the Green has over 1000 residents, but it only generates one dumpster of garbage per month! This building is reducing, reusing, recycling and composting over 80% of their waste.
