UPDATE: City Council takes the next steps towards funding transit with Commercial Parking Levy

Success! On February 29th, City Council’s Executive Committee instructed City staff to move forward to the next step in implementing a commercial parking levy.

The City will now take a proper inventory of all the commercial parking spaces in Toronto, consult with stakeholders, and report back to Council before Budget 2025 for a final decision.

This is a big step forward. A commercial parking levy could be a very significant source of funding for transit. But before it can be implemented, the City must first properly count all the commercial parking spaces across Toronto. This will also generate important information that the City needs for planning and building a greener, climate-friendly Toronto. Current staff estimates show that there could be as much as 30 square kilometers of commercial parking in the city — That’s equivalent to the area of the entire downtown core, from Bloor to the lake, Bathurst to the Don… twice over.

We are getting closer to implementing a commercial parking levy in Toronto. And we wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for everyday Torontonians like you speaking up to City Council alongside TEA and our friends at TTCriders. Without your voice, we would not be where we are today.

Toronto will be holding consultations about the commercial parking levy. Add your name here if you would like to be notified about ways to make your voice heard throughout this next stage.

We need to make sure that City Hall hears that a commercial parking levy is good for transit, good for housing, and good for our climate.
