In 2011, City Hall debated whether and how to privatize waste collection services west of Yonge Street.
TEA’s report looked at how contracting out waste collection might impact environmental results and Toronto’s waste diversion goals. The report identified examples from Toronto and other cities where private contracts affected waste diversion rates.
TEA used this report to successfully urge Council to get additional information on the true cost and savings of contracting out waste services. As a result of TEA’s research and advocacy, Council also increased the monitoring and strict enforcement of environmental standards in the private waste collection contract.
