Toronto is losing its fight against climate change amid budget squeeze

Sarah Buchanan, campaigns director for Toronto Environmental Alliance, said the city falling behind on the 2040 goal “has been obvious to me for a little while but it’s refreshing to see it acknowledged in written materials from city staff.

“The cat is out of the bag now on the city’s climate goals and a chronic underinvestment for a number of years in core commitments to the climate plan.”

Buchanan said carbon neutrality by 2040 is still possible with smart investments and help from the provincial and federal governments.

While there is scant money for new programs in this year’s budget, the city needs to seek new revenue sources to help get back on target, she said.

“It feels like the ship is starting to turn around a bit because, with relatively little money in this budget, there is at least a foundation for the future.”
