Help Make Toronto a Greener City For All by Joining TEA’s Board of Directors

The Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA) is currently seeking up to four new Board members to join its volunteer Board of Directors. 

For over 37 years, TEA has campaigned locally to find solutions to Toronto's urban environmental problems. TEA is a not-for-profit that is recognized Canada-wide for advancing successful municipal policies on climate change, waste reduction, and other issues critical to the health and well-being of Toronto residents. We work with communities across Toronto to build a greener, healthier, and more equitable city.

We are seeking individuals to join our inclusive and collaborative Board of Directors. Board members will have opportunities to help set policies for the organization, shape TEA’s strategic plan, and strengthen our relationships across the city.

Applicants should have a demonstrated commitment to social justice and/or environmental justice. We are especially seeking applicants with one or more of the following skills and experiences:

  • Senior financial management and oversight experience
  • Fundraising (professional or demonstrated experience and interest raising funds for local causes)
  • Experience developing progressive organizational policies focused on equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Strategic experience with records management and/or information and communications technology 
  • Governance and/or senior non-profit experience

Other experiences and commitments valued:

  • Experience working in the labour and/or public sector
  • Youth and young professional perspectives
  • Organizational risk management / legal experience 
  • Familiarity with and commitment to the work of TEA

Board members are expected to:

  • Oversee TEA’s governance in accordance with Ontario’s not-for-profit legal framework 
  • Have a strong understanding of and commitment to TEA’s mission
  • Commit to a three-year term with approximately 5 hours average per month or more depending on board roles taken on. This includes: 
    • Attending and meaningfully contributing to approximately 6 to 10 board meetings each year which take place either in-person at a downtown Toronto location or virtually 
    • Participating in committees of the Board to undertake essential governance tasks; committing to a minimum of 3 hours of Board committee work per month (these are mainly conducted virtually)
    • Representing and advocating for TEA at internal and external events, as needed
  • Prepare, reflect, share, learn, listen, and foster an inclusive work environment
  • Evaluate and support the Executive Director
  • Support aspects of the organization appropriate to your abilities
  • Be committed to social justice principles such as anti-oppression and anti-racism
  • Actively avoid or at a minimum declare any actual, potential or perceived conflicts of interest
  • Live and/or work in the City of Toronto

Each year, TEA’s board appoints or re-appoints a number of specific roles including: Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Equity Officer, and committee members. All members of the board share these responsibilities.
