TAKE ACTION: Tell your City Councillor and the Mayor to fund transit with a Commercial Parking Lot Levy

ACTION UPDATE: Success! On Thursday, Feb 29th, Toronto's Executive Council voted to begin counting parking spaces across the City of Toronto, a major step forward in implementing a commercial parking levy to fund transit in Toronto.

We've gotten this far because everyday Torontonians wrote emails, sent letters, and made phone calls to their Councillors and to the Mayor's office.

City Council is considering a proposal right now which could be a game-changer for transit funding. A commercial parking lot levy could bring in hundreds of millions of dollars every year. At a modest cost of just 1-2¢ per hour per parking spot, this money is a much needed new source of revenue to improve transit, and help reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions.

But even as we speak, shopping mall and big box store landlords are lobbying Councillors at City Hall, asking them to scrap the proposal that could fund vital transit improvement for their workers and customers. Mayor Chow promised to support a commercial parking levy in her election campaign, and now it’s time to make good on this commitment.

Transit improvements are urgent for so many Torontonians, and leaving a powerful funding tool within the City’s control on the table while we wait for crowded buses is simply irresponsible. The money raised by this levy could operate the entirety of the upcoming Eglinton and Finch West transit lines, and fund transit discounts through the Fair Pass program for all residents with low incomes. Every year.

We need your voices to fight for people over pavement. Use this tool to tell your City Councillor and the Mayor to support a 1-2¢ per hour commercial parking levy to fund transit and make Toronto a more vibrant and affordable place to live and work.
