Update: March 26, 2026

Success! City Council voted to strengthen Toronto’s tree protection bylaw, preventing countless large, healthy trees on private land from getting cut down. This includes:

• Stronger fines and enforcement for illegally cutting down large healthy trees on private land
• Special protection for our biggest healthy trees, with a new "distinctive tree" status
• Extra support for people to help protect large trees on their properties
• Support from City Council to protect hundreds of thousands more trees under the bylaw in the future
