TELL FORD: Hands Off Toronto's Climate Plan

The Ford government already gutted their own climate plan. Now, they’re trying to pass a new housing bill that would block climate action by scrapping municipal green standards for new buildings - making it impossible for Toronto to achieve its climate targets.

The Ford government introduced the More Homes Built Faster Act 2022 (Bill 23) and claims it will lead to more housing being built - but in fact, the bill would undermine action in many cities to address the climate crisis and housing crisis while doing nothing for affordability.

If passed, the bill would introduce sweeping changes that will erode environmental protections and override local decision-making powers. The new legislation would:

  • Block climate action by taking away the power for cities to pass green standards for new buildings - gutting Toronto’s Green Building Standard and making it impossible for Toronto to achieve its net zero targets.
  • Prevent TRCA from giving critical expertise to the City about ecology, building on wetlands, protecting endangered species, and other important environmental impacts of development - a reckless move which would block scientific experts from giving advice that prevents issues like flooding.
  • Dismantle tenant rights to replacement units when tenants are displaced for new developments and limit municipal powers to fund affordable housing through development charges.
  • Reduce the quality and quantity of new parks by changing how developers financially contribute to new parkland.

We need to raise the alarm bells about this destructive bill. Contact Premier Ford, your MPP, the Mayor and your City Councillor. Tell them to scrap Bill 23 to protect Toronto’s climate plan and our ability to create sustainable and liveable communities.
