Toronto Public Health has just identified 23 toxic chemicals released into Toronto’s air that exceed health-based benchmarks and subsequently, pose a great risk to our health and environment. These chemicals include carcinogens such as cadmium, trichloroethylene and formaldehyde. Shockingly, the exposure ratios ranged anywhere from ten times to 1000 times above benchmarks.

Yesterday’s release of the Environmental Commissioner’s Report “Doing Less for Less” reveals shocking details of the failure of the Ministry of the Environment to control companies from releasing pollutants into Toronto’s air, land and water. The report found that 90% of authorized polluters are not following the rules and that 40% of polluters don’t even have a permit to pollute.

Today, Dr. David Suzuki and the Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA) met with Mayor Miller and key City Councillors to reinforce the need to clean up Toronto’s air. Dr. Suzuki praised the Mayor and Councillors for their plans to develop a smog and global warming plan. However, he strongly recommended that the plan must include a Community Right to Know (CRTK) bylaw which requires industrial and commercial facilities to report their use and release of chemicals that pollute Toronto’s air and cause global warming.

(Toronto) The Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA) strongly supports the provincial government’s announcement today to ban the burning of used oil in space heaters. The move is a victory for TEA and other environmental groups who for years have identified the practice as a source of highly toxic local air pollution. The ban will not only improve air quality but will also remove a potential health threat to workers and local residents.
