Take action on Bill 23: Call your MPP

Any day now, the provincial government will be voting on Bill 23 - Doug Ford's so-called "housing" bill that would gut Toronto’s green building standard, displace tenants and bulldoze green spaces across the Province.

Our best hope in stopping this bill will be for residents like you to call your Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) and tell them to scrap Bill 23. If you know your MPP already opposes Bill 23, you can call the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks or the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing.

Here are step-by-step instructions on how to make the call:

Step One: Find the name of your provincial riding

Not sure about the name of your riding? Use this tool to find out, then come back to this page.

Step Two: Find your MPP’s phone number

We’ve listed the phone number for all Toronto MPPs below. (If you are outside of Toronto, use this find your MPP tool to pull up their name and phone number).

If you know your MPP opposes Bill 23, you can call:

Steve Clark

Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing

Phone number: 613-342-9522

David Piccini

Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks

Phone number: 905-372-4000

Step 3: Call and leave a message

Chances are that you will either reach a staff member or an answering service. Once you do, the three most important things to say are:

  1. Tell them your name.
  2. Tell them that you live in the riding (even better: tell them which neighbourhood you live in!)
  3. Tell them that you want them to cancel Bill 23

If you would like to get into more detail on why you want them to drop Bill 23, here are some options:

  • Bill 23 will scrap green building standards in many cities like Toronto, and block us from meeting our climate goals.
  • Bill 23 will make homes less affordable by weakening the requirements developers have to meet for energy efficiency, insulation, flood protection, water efficiency and more. This will mean more profits for developers - but more costs for tenants and homeowners.
  • Bill 23 will mean that cities lose funding from development charges, which are used to fund parks and community spaces - this could lead to higher taxes in many municipalities as a way to recover costs downloaded from developers.
  • Bill 23 will allow developers to destroy affordable housing without having to replace it.
  • Bill 23 will erode funding for new parkland and lead to lower quality, and fewer, parks in Toronto.

Step 4: Say ‘thank you’ and hang up

There is no need to stay on the line and chat if you don’t want to. Once you make your statement, you can say ‘thank you’ and hang up. Staff typically will record your position on the bill and relay it to the MPP.
